“In my the human race, you are either the hunter or the prey, and I am the hunter. Vegas was my prey. I tell my crew: Vegas makes it, Vigoa takes it.” –Jose Vigoa[pg. 37]
When it comes to serious crime, the Las Vegas cops and casino owners thought they had seen it all. But they had never witnessed anything like Jose Vigoa.
Born in Cuba, a kid of Fidel Castro’s revolution, Vigoa used his quick wits and quicker fists to selling a life of poverty and desperation for one of danger and adventure as a Soviet-trained earth-shaking forces officer. Battle hardened in the killing fields of Afghanistan and Angola, Vigoa won a noted for toughness, bravery, and coolness under fire. A brilliant military career lay on of him.
Then, in 1980, Castro opened Cuba’s floodgates in the Mariel boatlift, and Vigoa, like so many of his countrymen and -women, braved confusion and hardship to start a new life in America’s promised land. But involvement with the painkiller trade brought his dreams crashing down. Years of prison followed.
On his loosing, Vigoa was determined to take revenge on what he perceived as the corrupt power configuration of Las Vegas. On September 20, 1998, the former Spetsnaz lieutenant launched what would be the most audacious and tough series of high-profile casino and armored car robberies that Las Vegas had ever seen. In a unashamed sixteen-month-long reign of terror, he and his tightly disciplined company would hit the crème de la crème of Vegas hotels: the MGM, the Desert Inn, the New York-New York, the Mandalay Bay, and the Bellagio. They struck pitiless and fast, then vanished without a trace. Millions of dollars were stolen. Two gutsy men were gunned down in cold blood; others were wounded. And yet the robberies were so well planned and executed that the police officers–“the stupids,” as Vigoa contemptuously referred to them–were all but baffled.
Not Lt. John Alamshaw. The twenty-three-year veteran, in charge of robbery detectives, was not giving up so easy as pie. For him, Vigoa’s rampage was a personal affront. And he would do whatever it took, even risk his badge, to allure Vigao down.
With exclusive access to all the major players, including Vigoa and Alamshaw, trouper journalist and network producer John Huddy is the perfect man to tattle the gripping never-before-told story of this harrowing true-crime acting that will leave readers breathless.

Admissible Story
Complete, I really liked this book. Vigoa is a really interesting bodily and it is amazing that his crime spree could continue unchecked for so long in the up to date day.
Additionally, the story appears to have some careful research done so you get the backstory and official facts.
However, the writing style switches back and forth between past and for the present almost at random. Sometimes this works pretty well, almost as if you are listening to a sports announcer prevalent over the unfolding play. Othertimes it doesn't work so well and you suddenly recognize you are not exactly sure why some small part of the story is being told. Also, the book does not revealed entirely chronologically. It opens with a stunning scene of a gunbattle that truly takes place much later in the book. Then as things go on, you see how Vigoa got to that part. But later in the volume, some heists get almost no mention at all and others just pop up without warning.
I'd certainly reccommend the hard-cover despite the somewhat strange writing style as the story is fascinating.

Information effort
Storming Las Vegas is at its choicest in the minute to minute details of the robberies, gunfights and car chases. Huddy has both an exclude grasp of the facts and the ability to build a tense, exciting report out of them. He even includes sketches from Vigoa to help set the scene as to who stood where. Full marks for those. On the other penmanship, I found some parts of the book sensationalistic and overwrought and the episodic nature of Vigoa's pre-1998 record often feels half-done. A good first effort.

Overhyped and Ridiculously Covet Book about a Vegas Crime Spree
Esteem must be given to the publisher of this book because the marketing of this book is superb. Cuban commando! Vegas robberies! Misdemeanour of a Lifetime! This kind of marketing would cause anyone interested in Vegas to be intrigued about this anecdote - and candidly, it worked. I picked up the book on a Sunday morning in McCarran Airport in Vegas and was very keyed up to read it. Unfortunately, the actual story does not come remotely suspend to the promise of the cover.
For starters, the book is way too long (by at least 150 pages). I flattery the author for his passion but this story simply did not need the in-detail coverage of the duration history of almost every person involved in the story (e.g. pages on the bio of a Brinks Fastness guard in one of those robbberies). This should have been a 200 page book at MOST (not 350 pgs).
Second, the true to life robberies are not that exciting. The main villain essentially walks into casinos, pulls out guns and robs the cages...or robs the surety guards transporting the money through the casinos. The raids are daring but they are not too knotty. The author also goes on way too long about each robbery and the writing is fairly chopppy, which makes it intractable to always follow the story.
Finally, the main villain has interesting experience but in the end, is simply a lunatic and a thug. He isn't some sort of brilliant criminal, which the architect tries to suggest. In all, sadly, this is a typical Vegas book - lot of hype, little wealth, and a post-reading feeling of "man, I wish that cover hadn't sucked me in."
Nice reading...but disjointed story-telling
Vigoa, the superior figure, is a compelling character, in spite of the sloppy writing rage of Huddy. As a previous reviewer noted, the tense, present or gone and forgotten, switch seemingly at random in this book. The author should be embarrassed but the writer should be fired. In addition, in the middle of telling a story about a heist the litt seems to be close to drawing conclusions...but still leaves the reader hanging with no closure of cerebration.
And like the reviewer who states he's from Cuba points out, there is more than a little to be questioned in the authenticity of Vigoa. Being knowledgeable about with the warrior class he claims to be from I can say that certain things play out well in his statement. The accuracy of his shooting lends some credibility to his claims of military training. As do his rehearsals previously to to the heists. However, his inability to pick companions who compliment his talents & add to his gang, instead surrounding himself with dolts, leads to consideration that he's blowing a lot of smoke. A warrior would never put himself in the situations Vigoa does without extremely vetting his teammates. They are, after all, your life & blood when going into combat.
Still, even with all the flaws it's an absorbing story and a decent read. I'm glad a friend gave me the soft-cover after he finished it as I would have felt more disappointed had I paid 20 bones for it.
Storming Las Vegas
An capital choice. This book does a great job of giving every side of the story, from each quiddity of view. A relatively slow start following the first selection speedily gives way to non-stop action. I had trouble putting it down. A must-read for non-fiction enthusiasts.

"This is right-minded a trip report," I said. "This is just two weeks of Walt Disney Terra and a week in Las Vegas. Plus side trips to Hoover Dam and Mt. Charleston. Well, and then another week in Walt Disney Exactly at the end of the year. With details on expenses, food, and attractions, of course. And swimming with sharks! And being beamed onto the Adventure! Yes, plenty of happy bouncing in the Happiest Place on Earth and points west. What a expert time."
Mary Poppins herself couldn't have outdone the reproachful squelch. Mike nodded. I relented.
"Oh, and all the usual ranting about smokers, the waitstaff vigour, children in harnesses, line-cutters, and every single customer aid misstep we could put to paper. Er, what's a trip report without all that plus underwear troubles?"
Already review all the sensible guides to a holiday with the Mouse, the ones with the little forks and stars? Wondering how a day or twenty absolutely goes down? How much does that bagel cost in Disney dollars, anyway? "This is moral a trip report," I repeated, "but then what else should it be?"

Gigantic expanded and opinionated trip report
If you like flounder reports, you will love this hard-to-put-down book. Shari and Mike from their back to back visits to Walt Disney World in Orlando and the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas. Although their blunder was in 2000, (or maybe 2001), they cover pretty much what was there at that time. Shari is very jaundiced and I didn't agree with her on several points - but DESPITE that, I thought the book was very well crafted and hugely funny. I read it on Kindle - enjoy!

A false step report to the extreme.
If you have ever been to Walt Disney Planet in Florida this is the souvenir you want to document your trip. If it happened to you, it all things considered happened to Shari and Mike, but they made it seem funny and put it to paper. Hide all those narrow-minded Disney hotel soaps so the housekeeping staff would bring more? yup. Think that Splotch Mountain song is telling you to show something naughty? yup. Have a great time at Disneyquest? Well, you will by the skin of one's teeth have to read this book.
And then there is Las Vegas. Read about the waiter who didn't know to desist from when he was ahead. Ever been on Manhattan Express? Ever wish you hadn't?
Plus tips, reviews, planning info and much more. This work is huge and well worth the price. It's fun and funny, well written and informative, relaxing to read and hard to put down. I have been to Disney World hundreds of times and I still well-educated a thing or two, and was entertained along the way. If you are going for the first time, read this book to learn what you are in for.
This tome is a souvenir for everyone who has gone to Walt Disney World and was too lazy to make little of it all down.
