Abel Ferrara's reworking of William Gibson's cyberpunk story (from the short-story store Burning Chrome) is quite faithful to the source, which may explain why it bypassed cinemas almost fully to emerge on video. Gibson's story takes place utterly in flashback as its hero shuffles through the events that brought him to the tiny shoebox of a margin in the New Rose Hotel, on the run and out of ideas. Ferrara winds up in the same place, but first plays out his scenario for us to see... sort of. Industrial headhunters Christopher Walken, limping through the moving picture with a cane and a rumpled white suit like an emaciated Sydney Greenstreet, and Willem Dafoe, his enervated, tired partner, hatch a plan to lure a genetic-sciences talent from one corporation to another for a $100 million payoff. The key to their plan is seductive bar mademoiselle and part-time prostitute Asia Argento, a flirting chanteuse with whom Dafoe falls in honey. Set in a grimy technological future of generic cosmopolitan cities, the characters mosey fluorescent mazes of bland malls, murky bars, and faceless hotels, a Leaflet Runner future without the spectacle. Apart from brief, blurry video-camera scrutiny, the entire operation occurs offscreen, reported through conversations and phone calls, and even Ferrara fans may find the threatening, dawdling narrative and cerebral conclusion disappointing. But the tech-noir plot gives way to Ferrara's real story, the collision of the dreamers and the bosky world they live in. --Sean Axmaker

Oh Abel Ferrera, even Walken couldnt supporter this one!
Im a gargantuan Ferrera fan, i love his dark, no light at the end of the tunnell aproach to filmaking... howver this big is just terrible! I mean really freaking bad. Like, the worst I have ever seen. Walken couldnt help it, and neither could Dafoe.
Whether its Neo-ruffian or not shouldnt even matter, this movie is HORRIBLE!
Hampered by budget
Evidently this movie was hampered by budget. The director and actors are all top notch. The horror story is good, but a little short. If they had a bigger budget it could have been superb. Too bad it wasn't picked by hollywood and was done unfamiliar. It's worth watching.

One of the Greatest of it's kind but.....
As the Cyberpunk genus of Science Fiction writing grew in both authorship and readership, it only made perception that Hollywood would try it's hand at re-creating it in film. The results have been mostly dismal. Johnny Mnemonic and Paycheck might have had the organize elements but were way short of the "feel" so prevalent in the writing. Maybe they suffered from the headliner power or excessive budgeting or whatever but they were way short of the mark.
Enter Abel Ferrara. I'll say up front I like much of his effort, with The King of New York being my favorite. The first time I saw it I was a bit confused as to all the things prosperous on in the plot line, but the feeling of the film stayed with me to the point where I had to see it again. Now it's in my library and I take in it a couple of times a year. This is what makes this film mostly (but not entirely) triumphant. Of the several movies I've seen delving into Cyberpunk this is the one that comes closest to approaching the sensitivity of the Gibsian not too distant future, over technologized, over incorporated society. Things are pathetic at a breakneck pace and the stakes are high. The genius stroke in technology can put one society on top and another in the grave and that's pretty much what is happening here. Chris Walken and Willem Defoe are the primaries in a machinate to get a top engineer from one company to another and things go really bad.
The plot is great to a underscore but the problem is that it doesn't really end. It stops. The climax comes way too original and there's no reason to keep the movie going but it does for what seems like forever. I won't queer things but Defoe ends up in a cubby hole at "The New Rose Hotel" replaying the events in his bias and the viewer must now re-watch many of the scenes he's already watched. Was the script that bad or did they simply run out of the ready. Maybe they thought they had a 90 minute movie and only had 75 minutes after the conclusive cut. Whatever....this is why the film ultimately fails.
This should be seen though because it is one of the only films of its warm-hearted to capture the essence of the literature. A great effort if nothing else.

Something else.
I started watching the cinema, finally having had it on hold, i'd heard about it and how hated it was apparently. As a pellicle it's great, obviously not the greatest thing, but it was pretty intimate. It wasn't a big ending or it wasn't much an skirmish thriller, it wasn't that kind of picture at all. But, it was definitely a picture about the characters. The look of the obscure was very interesting and very dark, the score was pretty great, the acting too, first-rate. I think Ferrara made a great film, that seems to really be something that's been misunderstood. I haven't presume from the William Gibson short story so i don't know how much it differs from the beginning story, but adaptations are hardly ever perfect, maybe a few times, but what counts is the cloud on it's own. How the film performs and if it does anything for you.

Abel meets his go together in Asia Argento
New Rose Hotel, based on the unexpectedly story by William Gibson , is a very confusing yet entertaining film from top banana Abel Ferrara. You might not be clear on what is actually happening, not at first anyway, but you will be certain of how Abel kill for his leading lady Asia Argento. The two dated for a while after the making of this coat. Argento is not only incredibly sexy but she can also act. She's the best thing going for this membrane which stars Christopher Walken as Fox and Willem Defoe as X. The film takes come about sometime in the future and major corporations are stealing top scientists from rival companies. Fox and X are irritating to lure a Japanese scientist to their company. They hire a struggling catamite and dancer named Sandi (Argento) to seduce him. She agrees to do it after they tattle her how much they are going to pay her. X starts tutoring her in how to be seductive and the two fall for each other. Several steamy sex scenes copy and Fox gets wind of his partner's new fling. He worries that this will jeopardize their purpose but also their friendship. Walken does a good job of showing the fear that Fox has as the older of the two who worries that his callow protege is going to leave him. The basic plot is very similar to that of a definitive film noir where two guys use a beautiful young woman to get gen about a mystery man. One of the guys falls for the girl, the other guy gets suspicious, and someone dies. For the covering's first hour it seems like scenes are being cut short and we aren't getting the full record. Abel plays the full scenes during the film's last half hour cluing us in on what he was hiding. This makes that divide of the film the most exciting since we're finally getting the full story and by this time we're invested in what happens to X and Sandi. The acting from the three leads is save that and there is a lot of humor in the film. Early on there is a scene between Walken and Defoe that starts off scripted and ends on a mirthful rant improvised by both men. It's a nice Abel touch. Many of the people who worked on this movie worked on Abel's previous film "The Funeral" including Walken, Gretchen Mol, Annabella Sciorra, and Conqueror Argo. This film also has a great score by Ferrara regular Schooly D. Patently worth checking out for Abel fans or for any of the three stars.
Sleeping in the Aviary, Dear Vomit In A Cheap Hotel

Opening Sound In A Nice Package
This is an without equal album that is worth purchasing. Many of the songs represent the combination of a unsystematic back-porch twang of a Will Oldham single and the indie-rock alarums coined by Sonic Youth. There are clear comparisons to Neutral Wring Hotel's (NMH) In the Aeroplane over the Sea as this is a melancholy, self-deprecating album sharing a alike resemble whining croon borrowed from Jeff Mangum. That being said, if you have fatigued the greater part of the last decade listening and re-listening to that album, you may be immediately put out by these songs and the whisper that an album is being compared to NMH, but I implore you to get past that right now as you will never appreciate this note fully otherwise.
Expensive Vomit In a Cheap Hotel lends itself well to listeners of different genres. The attire art and some of the fervor of this album will help old-school punk fans identify with. The lyrics tend to be deep and sometimes even violent. In the song "Gas Mask Blues," this is extremely portrayed in the haunting lyrics "If you have my daughter, I don't know what I will do because I am going to insufficiency to hit her once she looks like you." This level of passion carries throughout and lays out a map of heartbreak and outrage. With the deep range of influences, anyone who listens to more conventional indie unnerve such as The Wrens, classic folk artists including Neil Junior, and rising pop artists like The New Pornographers, any listener may find something they like in this sub rosa.
Ultimately, this is highly recommended. This is a must-have for most music enthusiasts, but not quite a tuneful masterpiece.
How are they not distinguished?
Dear Vomit in a Cheap Hotel. With a title sounding something like a punk invention, Sleeping in the Aviary puts a caprice into your mind. By the end of this record, that notion is completely shattered. What occurs is a excursion through 11 songs, beginning with the building Write On. This album is correspondent-parts Neutral Milk Hotel, Bright Eyes, and in some moments, Elliott Smith. In person, I have a difficult time picking out a weak track. Maybe You're The Same is a lover's weep over, but the performance is intimate and a new spin. Girl in the Ground is a catchy tot up, one you have to hear for yourself. The album is solid, entertaining, and all-around great. While some would claim Sleeping in the Aviary's first album was lacking, I'd be shocked if they didn't revolution their minds with this album.
Why don't you know these guys? It's a question your mainstream fan is successful to ask you soon enough. You're going to slap your forehead and then buy this album--and love it. Why drag out the inevitable? Get it now.
